Cost of dying goes up again, the first of many councils, But NOT Express Cremation
CREMATIONS, burials and weddings in York are all set to get more expensive, under proposals to be put to the city council’s cabinet next week.
Charges the council makes in areas including bereavement services and registrars, as well as waste services and room hire at community centres – are all in line for a five percent increase under the annual proposals the cabinet will be asked to agree on Tuesday.
Among the highest increases is the charge for headstones placed at Dringhouses Cemetery – set to go up a quarter from £120 to £150, while the cost of a cremation for an adult is set to rise from £777 to £815; and a burial from £745 to £770.
In the registrar’s department, charges for marriages and baby naming ceremonies in the city’s registry offices will also rise – by £20 to £30 depending on the room used or the day the ceremony takes place.
The increases will generate £37,000 of income in the current financial year and £146,000 of income for the council in 2015/16 – including £88,000 from bereavement services and £25,000 from the registrars.
Increases in sport and leisure; adult social care; car parking and market sand many other areas will be looked at in the 2015/17 budget strategy.
